Reports and rumors of corruption have come up amid the departments failure to bring the killer to justice. In the release provided by the Suffolk investigators, they detailed the events leading up to the disappearances of Maureen Brainard-Barnes, Melissa Barthelemy, Megan Waterman, and Amber Costello, all four of whom were sex workers who advertised their services online at the time of their death. The so-called Long Island Serial Killer case remained a dead end, and according to Rolling Stone, some have placed the blame squarely on the shoulders of the Suffolk County Police Department.
